Computers are necessary for all daily activities in the Telecommunications Media Entertainment industry. Whether it be the call center fielding sales, technical support calls, or the field technicians going house to house, installing services, or fixing problems. Computers are used to create accounts, add and remove services, test signals, and coordinate routes. Servers are used for on-demand features to watch your favorite shows or connect customers to the internet. Computers are also used to create content for the company website or commercials for TV. Even VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) needs computers to transmit phone calls to landlines or cell phones.
Since computers are a big part of this company, it is necessary that employees be computer literate to some degree. Still, it all depends on the position as to how much knowledge is needed. A call center representative would only need to know how to utilize the software for the company and be able to assist customers. Other employees, like those who work in the field, keeping the data center up and running, would need extensive knowledge of how the industry operates and how to maintain the servers and the network that feeds content to customers.
Technology is exponentially growing, and according to a paper by Anita Cassard and Joseph Hamel, they state, “While we have seen a significant increase in data growth and use of big data, artificial intelligence (AI) could surpass the performance of human intelligence in all its facets in the near future” (p. 76). This could mean that AI could be incorporated into many functions of the Telecommunications Medi Entertainment industry within ten years and more than double the productivity and economic growth of the industry. Computer hardware is known to double in speed every two years, so within ten years, it will be ten times faster than it is today and be ready to handle integrated AI systems. Jobs of the future could be very different than they are today as the industry expands to more AI integration.
